Symbian gets Swype… Finally.

I first wrote about Swype on these pages back in February; now, more than six months later, it’s finally available for a select number of Nokia touch screen handsets — like my Nokia N97.

One of Swype’s founders is also partly responsible for the T9 predictive text-entry system for number pad handsets. And like T9, Swype will shortly become the de facto standard for touch screen text entry. Just you wait…

Vlingo: unremarkable, unnecessary?

There’s no point in duplicating the other in-depth reviews of Vlingo that you can elsewhere on the web. Suffice to say that in my limited testing Vlingo didn’t impress. Though letter-perfect with stock phrases it was noticeably worse in real-world use…

Nokia’s N900: Not for vertical markets.

This is a screen grab of the Nokia N900 phone dialer. It’s the only part of this super high-powered Linux phone that has a vertically-oriented display.

And for yours truly, that’s a bit of a problem…

My 2010 Nokia QWERTY smackdown.

Though I’ve mastered the art of T9 on my N86 (kinda), I’ll always have a soft spot for qwerty handsets– and seeing how I’ve got an N900 for a week or two let’s see how it fares in comparison to the rest of Nokia’s current lineup of smartphones for two-thumbs.

In other words, it’s time for a smackdown!
