Three types of free.

When it comes to 21st century culture, media and technology the concept of “free” can sometimes be difficult to pin down. So for my fellow citizens of the Internet I’ve drafted a pragmatic guide to free, in what I see as its three basic forms…

The gate at the top of the stairs.

The complex where I live is a mix of apartment and townhouse-style condominiums, with a series of locked iron gates providing access to the latter. Though I myself live in the ground-level courtyard, there’s another level of townhomes directly above me, along with some nice greenery and even an impromptu vegetable garden or two. And to access this oasis of calm in the big city you must pass through a gate like the one seen above…

Oa’s fall updates.

I guess it’s the lingering back-to-school mentality from my youth that puts me in reevaluation mode come September. Wait, it’s October now? Damn, better get to it.

Activism through sticker-ism.

Back when I was an unquestioning sheep in Apple’s flock I took great joy in looking down my nose at Windows boxes and all the hideous Microsoft and Intel stickers they came riddled with. Indeed, as a Linux user one of the more esoteric adjustments I’ve had to make has been to deal with the very same eyesores on machines I have purchased.

Goo Gone has been a great ally, but I’ve gone a step further and decided to fight fire with fire…

Byron Sonne and the “H” word.

From where l was sitting the room did not appear to be filled with Black Bloc anarchists plotting to overthrow the Canadian government, merely a small group of very bright people concerned about a friend.

As there is a publication ban on Mr. Sonne’s ongoing bail hearings, I will obviously be respecting that. But if you’re among the growing number of people arriving at this site via a keyword search for Byron Sonne, kindly allow me the opportunity to demystify the term “hacker” for you…
