Okay Android, you’re on!

I’ve given Google — and particularly Android, their mobile OS — a bit of a hard time on these pages. I think it’s justified; Google is doing some fantastic things for free software but is also guilty of its fair share of gaffes. But today an opportunity has presented itself for yours truly to trial Google’s Nexus One and one of Canada’s new mobile operators. How can I say no?

Back to the ‘buntus.

Over the past week I’ve been giving the latest and greatest KDE desktop a play on my desktop machine, and the lightweight PCLinuxOS ZenMini a trial on my netbook. As of this morning, I have nuked both drives and put Ubuntu proper on the desktop and Xubuntu on my Eee PC…

Ok, I’m calling it… DVD-Video is dead.

I won’t deny that DVD-Video was a saviour for home entertainment when it first came on the scene in the dying days of the last century, or that the PlayStation 2 was the perfect Trojan horse for widespread adoption of the format. I know. I was there.

But the days of DVD-Video have clearly come and gone…
