Author, speaker and “influencer” Tomi Ahonen has released his 2016 Almanac, an annual review for the mobile telecoms industry. This former Nokia exec now tours the world on the conference circuit, so one would assume that he knows what he’s talking about.
In what he himself calls his most popular blog post of the year, Tomi shares some key numbers from his research. Let’s have a look!
First up, a breakdown of handsets in use across the globe:
MOBILE HANDSETS IN NUMBERS
Dumbphones In Use – 3.0 Billion
Smartphones In Use – 2.6 Billion
Total Mobile Handsets in Use – 5.6 Billion
Dumbphones still outnumber smartphones, it seems, but the gap is narrowing. Next up, some stats about users:
MOBILE USERS IN NUMBERS
Total Unique Mobile Phone Human Users – 5.0 Billion
Total Mobile Reach, Including Shared Mobiles – 5.9 Billion
Total Active Human-Use Mobile Subscriptions (Accounts) – 7.2 Billion
Total Active Mobile Subscriptions (Accounts) including M2M – 7.6 Billion
“M2M” stands for machine to machine communication, a broad term for any networked device that perform sactions without direct assistance from humans.
INTERNET USE BY ACCESS METHOD: 3.2 BILLION TOTAL USERS
Internet Accessed by PC Only, Never by Mobile – 9%
Internet Accessed by Both PC and Mobile – 43%
Internet Accessed by Mobile Only, Never by PC – 48%
Tomi notes that tablets are included as PCs, not mobile phones. It was on Tomi’s blog that I first read about tablets being immobilizing rather than mobile—that is, locking users to a specific place.
MEDIA AND TECH TOP 5 LARGEST AUDIENCES BY UNIQUE HUMANS
DVD/Blu-ray Player Audience – 3.4 Billion
SMS Text Messaging Unique Users – 4.1 Billion
Radio Audience Reach – 4.3 Billion
Television Audience Reach – 5.3 Billion
Mobile Telecoms Reach – 5.9 Billion
These numbers speak to mobile as an entertainment platform, and a pretty lucrative one at that. Speaking of lucre:
MOBILE INDUSTRY REVENUES
Mobile Advertising – $49 Billion
Mobile Messaging – $195 Billion
Mobile Data – $305 Billion
Voice Calls – $649 Billion
Total Service Revenues – $ 1.197 Trillion
Networks, etc. – $131 Billion
Handsets – $409 Billion
Total Hardware Revenues – $540 Billion
TOTAL INDUSTRY REVENUES – $1.737 Trillion
TL;DR Mobile is a trillion-dollar industry, with the majority of revenues coming not from hardware sales, but from service fees paid to your wireless provider.
