If they can pull this off, it could be really fun.
In a forum post yesterday OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei revealed that the successor to last year’s OnePlus One would be revealed to the world entirely in VR. I’ll admit, that sounded really stupid to me, until I realized that OnePlus is also offering their own version of Google Cardboard specifically for the launch.
The best part? When ready the VR headset will be available from OnePlus for free—though the usual shipping charges will apply.
OnePlus has taken a lot of heat as of late—first for the Snapdragon 810 (see what I did there?) and then from lazy tech journalists with an overinflated sense of self. But I think a VR phone launch is rather clever, particularly in an age when the Apple-style keynote presentation has become a tired cliché. Maybe the fact that I’ve yet to experience cardboard-style VR for myself has something to do with it.
The timing of the event works out perfectly for me as well; scheduled for July 27th at 10pm Eastern, I’ll literally be just home from my summer vacation. If I don’t collapse from jet lag first I’ll be sure to tell you all about the first-ever VR phone launch first thing the next morning.
