Last year I did my best to round-up some of the more notable April Fool’s Day pranks being posted around the Internet—at least the ones related to smartphones, accessories and such. This year Android Central has already beat me to it—thanks to them I can cut right to the chase and present to you what I think is the best of the lot.
But that’s not even the best part; the best part is that redditors are playing along.
Here’s a sample of fandroids doing their best sheeple impersonation:
> Gold of course. I’m not a peon.
>> Wait, do you mean they’re actually producing the non-gold version? I thought that was just a joke. That’s going to completely cheapen the brand image.
>>> I’m getting the Yellow Gold Edition with the bright red modern buckle. I dropped out of college for a few semesters in preparation for this day, but it’s definitely worth it.
And the sharp knife of satire cuts both ways:
> We are not here to spoonfeed you.
>> Wipe Dalvik. Can’t find Dalvik? Wipe Dalvik.
>>> hey when u root make sure u install HELLFIRE SANDWICH, it’s the best ROM and don’t forget to overclock ur phone so u can watch those sweet 10-bit animes.
If this sort of high-level passive-aggressive mockery isn’t your thing, you can also play Pac-Man on Google Maps today—but for me it’s less of a prank and more of a: “That’s so cool! How did they do that?!!”
I must confess that watching fanboys and girls duke it out from the sidelines is a bit of a guilty pleasure. In the case of this reddit prank I’ve the sneaking suspicion that both Android and Apple fans are taking to the others’ subreddit to make fun of themselves.
